Peter Neill

Since the age of 12, Peter Neill has been engaged with Mencap. Now 23 years old, he has participated in a range of activities with the organisation, including educational courses, trips and summer camps.

He really enjoyed outings to Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh and summer camps which took place in Tollymore Forest in Co. Down have special memories for him, as he took part in camp duties, learned new cookery skills and did brilliant outdoor activities, like canoeing.

When Peter became too old to attend the camp himself, he was made a Peer Leader, helping younger children take part, which built his personal confidence and increased his own social skills.

Another aspect of Peter’s work with Mencap was his participation in the Its Politics programme, where he engaged with various political figures in Northern Ireland.

At a special event at Music Factory, Peter made a speech to a large crowd, addressing rights issues in Northern Ireland and his mum Una ranks this as one of her proudest moments. Peter would like to do more of this work as he found the people very interesting and he has also spoken at a major European politics event.

Peter has made lots of new friends through engaging with Mencap – he attends the Gateway Club in Carrickfergus, which meets regularly at Sunnylands Youth Club and is a member of Mencap’s Youth Forum.

He really enjoys meeting with other friends from Mencap and they get together in a local sports bar to enjoy a drink while playing snooker. Bowling is another hobby they pursue regularly.

Peter has also sat on panels for job interviews with Mencap and has helped with recruitment for positions which have included the organisation’s Communications Officer in Northern Ireland.

He’s still taking classes with Mencap, including finishing a recent course on animation skills through the LiveNet Programme, while building his own education by studying Administration at Belfast Metropolitan College.

Peter is also getting ready to take part in the Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon for Mencap.
